About Baylands Nature Preserve

Baylands Nature Preserve, located primarily in Palo Alto and Menlo Park, California, encompasses over 1,300 acres of tidal salt marshes, mudflats, and restored wetlands along the San Francisco Bay. This preserve plays a critical role in protecting important habitats for numerous species of migratory birds, endangered plants, and aquatic wildlife. Historically, the area was part of the expansive South Bay wetlands, much of which was altered or filled for agriculture and development during the 19th and 20th centuries. Conservation and restoration efforts have since brought back vital tidal flows and native vegetation, making the preserve an ecological haven. Visitors can explore a network of levee trails and boardwalks that traverse diverse landscapes, providing access to birdwatching spots, educational kiosks, and picnic areas. The preserve is recognized for its significant populations of shorebirds and waterfowl, including the Ridgway's rail and salt marsh harvest mouse, both species of concern. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, birding, cycling, and photography in a quiet natural environment just minutes from urban centers. The preserve supports environmental education programs and volunteer restoration activities, fostering community connection to the natural world. Baylands Nature Preserve’s expansive tidal marshes also act as natural buffers protecting the inland from flooding and help improve water quality by filtering pollutants from urban runoff.
